When is Memorial Day?
Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May, so it always forms a three-day weekend and shifts within the month from year to year. The earliest it can fall is May 25 and the latest is May 31.
It is a federal holiday. Government offices, banks, and most businesses and schools close for the day.
What Memorial Day remembers
The holiday began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, when people decorated the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers. It gradually grew to honor all US service members who died in any war.
The date was fixed to the last Monday of May by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which took effect in 1971. It is distinct from Veterans Day, which honors all who have served, living and dead.
How Memorial Day is observed
People visit cemeteries and memorials, lay flags and flowers at graves, and attend parades. A national moment of remembrance is observed at 3 p.m. local time, when Americans are asked to pause in silence.
The long weekend also marks the informal opening of summer, with barbecues, road trips, and pools and beaches reopening across much of the country.
