Where does Black Friday come from?
The term Black Friday started in the United States. In the 1950s and 1960s, police in Philadelphia used it to describe the heavy traffic, crowds and busy shopping streets on the day after Thanksgiving, when many people were off work and headed into the city.
Retailers later gave the name a more positive spin: on this day shops were said to move from the red into the black, meaning from loss into profit. Over time Black Friday became the unofficial start of the US Christmas shopping season.
Black Friday, Black Week and Cyber Monday
Black Friday is no longer just a single day. Many shops now stretch their deals into a whole Black Week, with offers that sometimes start on Monday or earlier and only wind down the following weekend.
Right after the weekend comes Cyber Monday, on Monday 30 November 2026. That day is mostly about online deals. The term was coined in 2005 by the US retail industry for the wave of online shopping on the Monday after Black Friday.
Why the date of Black Friday changes each year
Black Friday has no fixed date. It is tied to Thanksgiving, the American holiday that falls on the fourth Thursday of November, and Black Friday is the day right after. That is why it always lands on a Friday in late November, but on a different date number each year.
Because the fourth Thursday of November can fall between 22 and 28 November, Black Friday always sits between 23 and 29 November. If you want to know exactly how many days are left, the countdown above keeps track for you automatically.
Black Friday in the coming years
In 2026 Black Friday is on Friday 27 November, in 2027 on Friday 26 November and in 2028 on Friday 24 November. After that comes Friday 23 November 2029 and Friday 29 November 2030.
As you can see the date shifts every year, but it is always a Friday. Feel free to put this year's date in your calendar so you do not miss the start of the deals.
